Who Is George Lucus?!

What is 'Star Wars?'

On Wednesday May 25 , 1977 a movie came to America, a movie that in time became a cultural and movie phenomenon. This master piece is Star Wars, created and directed by George Lucas, a young man who followed his dreams of making a saga that would remind us the classic conflicts of the medieval period. This was the way this third production from Lucas was born and to celebrate its twentieth anniversary he decided to use technology in order to create his Special Edition. Arguing that his "master piece" never was what he expected it to be, Lucas remasterized the movie, its soundtrack (adding his own THX sound system) and adding new digitalized scenes to finish the project that was initiated twenty years ago.

This Star Wars Trilogy has been misinterpreted as a sci-fi movie when it actually is merely a fantasy film. The time –"A long time ago"- and the place –"In a galaxy far, far away"- in which the story is set gives Lucas an infinity of places, vehicles, weapons, religion, politics and all kind of variants of familiar stuff.

The story is the classic conflict between good and evil, only that it's set in space. The good is represented by the enthusiast and naive boy named Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil), the cinic and sarcastic space pirate Han Solo (Harrison Ford), his loyal copilot Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), the beautiful Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and the mystical oldman Ben Kenobi (Alec Guiness), together they will face the evil forces of the mean Darth Vader (David Prowse).

Star Wars finds its basis on sci-fi literature from Isaac Asimov, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Alex Raymond, sci-fi series like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. The idea of battles has it origin in the Korea War and in the great number of World War movies. From Errol Flynn movies, Zorro, pirates and duels Jedi Knights were born; the lightsaber has elements from the ancient Samurai culture.

The oriental phylosophy and the junction of several religions gave birth to the Force and the supernatural powers of the Jedi. The evolution of robots in movies, "The day the Earth stopped", "Metropolis", "Logan's run" and even the tin man from the "Wizard of Oz" gave origin to the droids C3PO and R2D2.
